Nigeria’s National Economic Council has widened the mandate of its Ad-hoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft Prevention and Control to include illegal mining, amid growing concern over the theft of gold and other solid minerals.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who chairs the committee, confirmed the decision after the Council’s 153rd meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja.

He said the expanded terms would strengthen coordination with the Ministry of Solid Minerals and security agencies to curb resource smuggling and boost national revenue.
Governor Uzodimma noted that the committee’s earlier work had helped raise crude oil output from about 800,000 to 1.7 million barrels per day. The Council hopes the same collaborative model will now be applied to safeguard Nigeria’s mineral wealth and foreign exchange earnings.
