The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that international customers owe $5.79 million for electricity supplied in the second quarter of 2024.
The amount is equivalent to N9.41 billion. This outstanding debt is part of a broader challenge in collecting payments for electricity exports to neighboring countries.
According to NERC’s latest quarterly report, market operators invoiced four firms from Benin, Niger, and Togo for a total of $15.60 million during the period.
However, only $9.81 million has been paid, leaving a substantial balance. The firms involved include Paras-SBEE and Transcorp-SBEE from Benin, Mainstream-NIGELEC from Niger, and Odukpani-CEET from Togo, all regular buyers of Nigerian electricity.

Nigeria exports electricity to these neighboring countries under international agreements. This cross-border electricity trade, facilitated through treaties, is essential for regional cooperation, but unpaid bills continue to pose significant challenges to Nigeria’s power market operations.
