The death toll from Saturday’s collapse of a three-storey building on Oremeta Street in the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos has risen to five. The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, confirmed this in a statement on Sunday, adding that 15 people have so far been rescued from the rubble.
The building, which reportedly housed a local restaurant and was still under construction, collapsed around 8am on Saturday, trapping several people. Residents say it gave way shortly after some workers arrived for duty.

According to NEMA’s South-West Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, the bodies of three females and two males were recovered in the early hours of Sunday. He also confirmed that a total of 20 people had been rescued, including six women and nine men who survived with injuries.
Emergency responders from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, and local volunteers are continuing rescue operations. LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu, said efforts are ongoing to reach ground zero and ensure no one remains trapped beneath the debris.
