NEMA Pledges to Strengthen Emergency Response in South-East

The National Emergency Management Agency says it is taking steps to reduce delays and close existing gaps in emergency preparedness and response across the South-East region. Director-General Zubaida Umar stated this on Monday at the opening of a two-day stakeholders’ engagement workshop in Enugu.

The event, jointly organised by NEMA, the World Bank Group, and the Enugu State Government, is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s disaster response framework. Mrs. Umar, represented by the agency’s Director of Planning, Research and Forecasting, Dr. Onimode Bamidele, said Enugu is one of seven pilot states in the first phase of the project.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, praised NEMA for the initiative. He said the programme is crucial to improving the capacity of first responders at state, local, and community levels.

Participants at the workshop include officials from the Federal Fire Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, and various ministries, as well as representatives of the media.
