The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved the release of ₦28 billion to electricity distribution companies for the purchase and installation of prepaid meters under the Meter Acquisition Fund Tranche B scheme.
The initiative aims to close Nigeria’s metering gap, eliminate arbitrary billing, and speed up free meter deployment to customers.
According to NERC’s latest order, the funds—drawn from market collections—will serve as a revenue-backed intervention to strengthen utilities’ financial capacity.

DisCos are to select qualified Meter Asset Providers through transparent procurement within 10 days, while approved suppliers must meet a 30 percent local content threshold.
The programme targets unmetered Band A and B customers across the country.
