Netanyahu Signals Israeli Control of Gaza, But Rules Out Long-Term Governance

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said Israel plans to take control of the Gaza Strip to ensure security but has no intention of governing the territory.

Speaking in an interview, ahead of a key cabinet meeting, Mr Netanyahu said the aim is to eliminate Hamas and then transfer authority to a civilian administration that does not support Israel’s destruction. He indicated that Arab forces could be invited to manage the territory, while Israel maintains a security buffer.

His remarks come amid mounting international criticism over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

UN agencies have warned of looming famine, and the Health Ministry in Gaza says four more people—two of them children—died from hunger in the past 24 hours. The death toll from famine-related causes now stands at 197, including 96 children, since the conflict erupted following Hamas’s October 7 attacks.
