New NERC Chief Vows Crackdown on Electricity Theft

The incoming Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Abdullahi Ramat, says he will work with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to arrest and prosecute consumers involved in meter bypass and electricity theft.

Ramat, who is awaiting Senate confirmation, said penalties under the Electricity Act 2023 include up to three years’ imprisonment. He added that a name-and-shame campaign would also be used to deter offenders.

He outlined plans to introduce technology-driven solutions, including an app to give regulators real-time visibility of payments and grid operations, alongside a whistleblowing tool for citizens to report theft anonymously.

Ramat said almost half of Nigeria’s generated power is lost to inefficiencies and theft, which raises tariffs for honest customers. He pledged to use digitisation to reduce losses, boost investor confidence and stabilise electricity supply.
