The newly enacted Nigeria Revenue Service, NRS, Act has introduced strict penalties for the unauthorised disclosure of confidential documents.
Signed by President Bola Tinubu alongside three other tax-related laws, the measures take effect on 1 January 2026. The law classifies all internal records — including memoranda, communications, and business tax data — as confidential.

Offenders face fines up to ₦5 million, prison terms of up to three years, or both. The rules apply to all NRS officials and anyone involved in tax administration.
Exceptions include disclosures authorised by the service, ordered by a court, or required for enforcing tax laws.
The move follows a February 2024 warning to civil servants against leaking sensitive government information.
