The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reported that 1,463 people were killed and 1,172 kidnapped by non-state actors in Nigeria between January and September 2024. May recorded the highest number of deaths with 298, while March saw the most kidnappings at 499.
These figures were presented at a human rights workshop in Abuja, held by the NHRC in partnership with the European Union. NHRC Senior Human Rights Adviser Hillary Ogbonna highlighted the concerning rise in human rights abuses, including child abandonment.
The NHRC attributed the escalation of violence and kidnappings to the state’s failure to protect citizens, calling for immediate measures to address this growing crisis and safeguard human rights across the country.
