Nigeria a Multi-Faith State, Not Targeting Christians, Says Festus Keyamo

Senate bars Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from resuming despite suspension expiry

Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has dismissed claims by US President Donald Trump that Christians are being targeted in Nigeria, describing the allegation as baseless.

President Trump had accused the Nigerian government of allowing what he labelled as the “mass slaughter” of Christians and threatened possible US intervention.

In response, Mr. Keyamo said President Bola Tinubu’s marriage to a Christian pastor and his record of multi-faith appointments prove otherwise. He noted that most of the nation’s current security chiefs are Christians, making the idea of an anti-Christian policy unthinkable.

Mr. Keyamo, a former human rights lawyer, admitted Nigeria faces long-standing security challenges but said these affect citizens of all faiths. He reaffirmed that Nigeria remains a secular nation whose constitution guarantees freedom of religion and equal protection for all.
