Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has described Nigeria as a “typical example of where democracy is dying.” He made the remarks at the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Annual Democracy Dialogue in Accra, Ghana.
Speaking on the theme ‘What Makes Democracy Die?’, the former Anambra State governor said democracy fails when it no longer serves the people, stressing that accountability, security, education, healthcare, and poverty reduction must remain priorities.

Mr Obi argued that in Nigeria, democracy has become a tool for elite capture of the state, granting access to public resources for personal gain. He urged citizens to elect leaders with competence, capacity, character, compassion, and commitment to service.
He also criticised the recently lifted six-month emergency rule in Rivers State, calling it a constitutional breach. Obi said lessons must be learned from the episode to strengthen democratic governance in the country.
