The Nigeria Football Federation look set to secure the international future of River Plate’s prolific youth striker, Jonathan Spiff Asuzu.
The 18-year-old, born in the Argentinian capital city of Buenos Aires to a Nigerian father and Argentine mother, has been called up to the Flying Eagles ahead of the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup. Coach Aliyu Zubairu will assess him during the team’s training camp, with a potential debut in Chile that would provisionally tie him to Nigeria.

Asuzu, recently promoted to River Plate’s reserve team after a run of impressive goalscoring displays, cites Nigeria legend Austin Okocha as his footballing inspiration. Known for his pace, intelligent movement and two-footed finishing, he visited Africa earlier this year for a youth tournament in Morocco — and could now wear Nigerian colours on the global stage.
