Nigeria Faces Medical Brain Drain as 15,000 Doctors Exit Over Low Wages

The Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Kano State branch, Abdurrahman Ali, has expressed concern over the departure of 15,000 medical doctors from Nigeria by 2024 due to inadequate remuneration.

Speaking at a media conference during the NMA’s Physician Week, Ali highlighted the need for fair compensation and recognition of doctors’ contributions to retain talent within the healthcare system. This year’s theme, “Ensuring Universal Applicability in Remuneration: a Panacea to Talent Retention in the Healthcare System,” underscores the urgency of addressing these challenges.

He also urged the Kano State government to honour its agreement with the NMA regarding the revised hazard allowance for health workers.

The week’s activities will conclude with a medical outreach in Bichi Local Government, offering free consultations, medications, and surgical procedures, including dental and eye care.
