Nigeria’s daily petrol consumption has fallen to 50 million litres, with local refineries now meeting half of the demand, the Federal Government confirmed on Wednesday. The remaining 25 million litres are being imported, though, according to the Federal Government, none of the domestic refiners are involved in these import operations.
Addressing journalists after a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, Executive Director of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, NMDPRA, Ogbugo Ukoha, stated that imports remain necessary to prevent fuel shortages.

In a related development, Mr. Ukoha announced that from March 1, 2025, tankers with a 60,000-litre capacity will be prohibited from transporting petroleum products. The decision, despite opposition from truck owners, aims to enhance safety in the sector.
The National Association of Road Transport Owners warned that the ban could jeopardise N300 billion invested in over 2,000 affected trucks, potentially disrupting fuel distribution nationwide.
