Nigeria is set to lead the creation of a new international rugby league competition aimed at supporting emerging nations. The initiative, known as the Emerging Nations Challenge, is expected to run alongside the Rugby League World Cup later this year.
The tournament has received backing from the International Rugby League and is scheduled to take place in Sydney, Australia, from October 19 to November 11. Participating teams are expected to play four matches in what organisers describe as a competitive but developmental format.
Officials of the Nigerian Rugby League Association say the idea was conceived after Nigeria narrowly missed qualification for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. The new competition is designed to give players more international exposure and improve performance standards.

The tournament will feature both men’s and women’s teams and could expand to different regions in the future.
