Nigeria is set to deepen its engagement with the G20 following an invitation from South Africa to host a related event in Abuja ahead of the bloc’s annual leaders’ summit in Johannesburg this November.
South Africa’s Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola extended the offer to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar during diplomatic exchanges tied to summit preparations. South Africa currently holds the G20 presidency.
While the specific event Nigeria will host is yet to be confirmed, the development signals growing cooperation between Africa’s two largest economies and Nigeria’s most direct G20 role to date.

Though not a permanent member, Nigeria has joined past summits as a guest, including under India’s presidency in 2023 and through initiatives such as the G20 Compact with Africa during the Buhari administration.
This year’s G20 agenda, under South Africa’s presidency, centres on digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and strengthening global cooperation in a shifting world order.
