Nigeria Receives $52.88m in Recovered Assets from US

The Nigerian government has officially received $52.88 million in recovered assets linked to former Minister of Petroleum Diezani Alison-Madueke from the United States. The announcement was made by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, during a signing ceremony for the asset agreement in Abuja on Friday.

Mr. Fagbemi revealed that $50 million of the recovered funds will be allocated through the World Bank to support rural electrification projects, while the remaining $2 million will be directed to the International Institute of Justice to enhance the justice system and combat corruption. He noted that this asset recovery marks a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in the fight against corruption and the promotion of the rule of law.

The Attorney-General also highlighted the event as a major initiative by President Bola Tinubu to tackle corruption in the country. 

In related remarks, United States Ambassador to Nigeria Richard Mills emphasised the importance of monitoring and effectively utilising the recovered assets to ensure they benefit the Nigerian populace.
