Nigeria Recorded 75,000 New HIV Infections In 2023

Nigeria recorded 75,000 new infected HIV cases and 45,000 HIV-related deaths in 2023. This is according to Dr Temitope Ilori, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA. 

Speaking at a two-day National Prevention Technical Working Group meeting organised by NACA in Abuja on Wednesday, she said although there is a gradual reduction in new HIV infections, there is a need to implement the recommendations made at the 2024 Nigeria HIV Prevention Conference and ongoing meetings to eradicate HIV/AIDS by 2030.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, who was represented by Dr Bashorun Adebobola, the National Coordinator, National AIDS/STI Control Programme, NASCP, urged stakeholders to discuss progress on actions and strategies taken toward preventing HIV transmission.

He also said even though impressive gains have been made, we are still at risk and face the threat of a rebound of the infection
