Nigeria records 50 percent drop in maternal deaths in health facilities

Nigeria recorded a nearly 50 percent drop in maternal deaths in health facilities in 2025, according to the State of the Health of the Nation Report released by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The report shows that facility-based maternal deaths declined from 904 in 2024 to 460 in 2025, a development linked to expanded access to skilled maternity care, improved referral systems, and the scale-up of emergency obstetric services nationwide.

It also indicates that skilled birth attendance rose to 86.3 percent, while institutional deliveries attended by trained health workers increased from 82.2 percent in 2024 to 86.5 percent in 2025.

Despite the progress, the report says Nigeria still carries a significant share of global maternal deaths due to challenges such as weak health financing, shortages of skilled health workers, and limited access to emergency obstetric care.
