Nigeria Seeks Seat on UN Human Rights Council

Nigeria has formally declared its bid for membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027 to 2029 term. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, announced the candidature in a video statement posted on his verified X account.

Mr Tuggar described the council as a key platform for dialogue, conflict prevention and international cooperation on human rights. He said Nigeria is prepared to work with the council’s mechanisms and international partners to promote peace, justice and sustainable development in Africa and beyond.

The minister outlined government measures, including financing safe schools and strengthening secure learning environments to protect children amid security challenges. He also cited ongoing reforms aimed at improving accountability in internal security operations, as well as commitments to freedom of religion, economic reform, social investment and climate action.

Nigeria last served on the Human Rights Council from 2018 to 2020. Elections to the council are held annually, with members serving three-year terms on a rotational basis. Angola, Egypt, Mauritius and South Africa were recently elected for the 2026 to 2028 term.
