The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, has revealed that the country recorded its highest-ever petrol imports in 2022, totalling 23.54 billion litres. This surpasses the previous low of 16.88 billion litres in 2017. Â
In a statement, NEITI’s Acting Director of Communication, Obiageli Onuorah, commended the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited for completing Phase 1 of the Port Harcourt Refinery and restarting operations at the Warri Refinery. Â

The agency described these milestones as crucial for achieving energy self-sufficiency and economic sustainability. It highlighted the benefits of revitalising these refineries, including enhanced energy security, job creation, support for local industries, and savings on fuel imports.
NEITI emphasised that redirecting saved funds towards critical sectors like health, education, and infrastructure would significantly boost Nigeria’s development agenda.
