Nigeria Signals Interest in Hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games

The Nigeria Olympic Committee, NOC, has confirmed the country’s formal expression of interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Abuja positioned as the prospective host city.

In a statement issued on Monday, NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya revealed that Nigeria submitted its letter of intent ahead of the 28 March deadline. However, any formal bid remains contingent on the endorsement and financial commitment of the federal government.

This letter of intent follows an unsuccessful bid for the 2014 edition, which was eventually awarded to Glasgow. The capital city, Abuja, last hosted a major international event in 2003, when it welcomed athletes from across the continent for the All Africa Games, widely remembered by its acronym, COJA.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are now set to return to Glasgow between 17 and 29 March, after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew from hosting duties in 2023, citing rising costs.
