Nigeria Strengthening Preparedness for Future Pandemics, Minister

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Adekunle Salako, says Nigeria is strengthening its preparedness for future pandemics, warning that another global outbreak is inevitable.

He made the remarks on Monday at a public health symposium in Abuja, where he said lessons from COVID-19 had exposed weaknesses in health systems but also highlighted the importance of coordination and resilience.

Salako said Nigeria has improved its health security through measures including digital disease surveillance, expanded diagnostic capacity with over 100 public health laboratories, and the establishment of emergency operation centres across all states and the Federal Capital Territory.

He added that the country is working with international partners, including through World Health Organisation pandemic agreement negotiations, to enhance readiness and ensure a coordinated response to future health emergencies.
