The Federal Ministries of Steel Development and Defence have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, to produce military hardware locally at the Ajaokuta Steel Company.
The agreement includes a second MoU between DICON and Ajaokuta Steel, establishing a framework for manufacturing armoured vehicles, helmets, and weapons components from locally produced steel.
The Minister of Steel Development, Mr. Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, described the pact as a ‘bold step towards self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing,’ which, he noted, aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s industrial diversification agenda.

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, highlighted the dual benefits for economic growth and national security, noting Nigeria possesses the raw materials and expertise to produce defence equipment domestically. Analysts say the collaboration could revive Ajaokuta, create thousands of skilled jobs, and position Nigeria as a regional hub for defence manufacturing.
