Nigeria’s Acting National Population Commission Chairman, Muhammad Dattijo Usman, has urged an urgent update of national population data, warning that the lack of credible figures hampers planning, resource allocation, and delivery of essential services. Speaking in Abuja at the sixth anniversary of the Nairobi Summit on ICPD+25, he stressed that Nigeria’s last census was nearly two decades ago.
Mr. Usman highlighted that nearly 70 percent of Nigerians are under 30, describing the youthful population as a major opportunity if the government invests in education, health, and empowerment. He also emphasised maternal health, access to family planning, and ending gender-based violence as urgent national priorities.
