The Nigerian Army has dismantled 56 illegal refineries and recovered 1.2 million litres of stolen crude oil during a week-long operation in the Niger Delta. Acting Deputy Director of 6 Division Army Public Relations, Jonah Danjuma, disclosed this in a statement from Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Between November 25 and December 1, 2024, troops deactivated 56 illegal oil bunkering sites across Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states. The operations also saw the destruction of 88 cooking drums, 20 boats, and the discovery of six illegal pipeline connections used for oil theft.
Seventeen suspects were arrested, and seven vehicles used for transporting stolen crude were intercepted. The military described the crackdown as part of a renewed effort to tackle illegal oil bunkering and economic sabotage in the region.
