The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Affam Osigwe, has strongly criticised recent remarks by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, regarding the role of lawyers in financial fraud. Osigwe expressed his reservations while speaking at the unveiling of the 2025 NBA General Conference logo and theme.
While acknowledging that no profession is entirely immune to ethical breaches, Mr. Osigwe described Olukoyede’s characterisation of lawyers as primary enablers of financial crimes as inaccurate and unwarranted. He emphasised the need for balanced and evidence-based discussions on professional ethics.

Mr. Osigwe further urged stakeholders to avoid generalising misconduct to entire professions, adding that such comments undermine the critical role lawyers play in upholding justice and the rule of law.
