The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi, says Nigeria’s political elite continue to undermine the country’s progress by treating public office as a family enterprise. Speaking at the 15th anniversary of Enough is Enough Nigeria in Lagos, he said many leaders deliberately miss opportunities for national development because they view governance as serving themselves and those close to them.
Sanusi told the audience that the country has suffered long enough from decisions driven by personal interest and called for a shift in public service culture. He said young Nigerians must no longer accept the dysfunctional system that has been passed down to them and should instead help build a country that reflects its true potential.
He warned that Nigeria’s current structure is shaped by ethnic rivalries, religious conflicts and competition for personal gain. He urged youths across all social lines to unite and develop a clear national vision that prioritises citizens over political interests.
