Nigerian Ports Authority to Raise Tariffs by 15%

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced plans to implement a 15% tariff increase across all its rates and dues, citing the urgent need to modernise infrastructure and upgrade equipment.

Speaking at a maritime stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, NPA Managing Director Abubakar Dantsoho, who was represented by the agency’s Executive Director of Marine and Operations, Olalekan Badmus, highlighted the pressing challenges facing the ports. He noted that aging infrastructure, outdated equipment, and slow expansion efforts have continued to undermine efficiency and competitiveness.

Mr Dantsoho emphasised that, like port authorities globally, the NPA depends on operational revenue to finance critical responsibilities. These include maintaining and constructing port infrastructure, dredging channels, providing navigational aids, and acquiring modern marine crafts to ensure efficient harbour operations.

The tariff adjustment, he stressed, is essential to reposition Nigerian ports for enhanced performance and sustained growth in an increasingly competitive maritime sector.
