Nigerian Prisons Hold Nearly 49,000 Awaiting Trial, Says Acting Correctional Chief
Sylvester Nwakuche, Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service

The Acting Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, has revealed that 48,932 inmates in the country’s prisons are awaiting trial.

Speaking on Monday during an interactive session with field officers, Mr. Nwakuche highlighted overcrowding as the most pressing challenge facing the service. He outlined a series of measures aimed at addressing the issue.

The correctional chief announced plans to work closely with key judicial and law enforcement bodies, including the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police, to expedite court proceedings for inmates whose cases have stalled.

Additionally, Mr. Nwakuche disclosed his administration’s commitment to promoting non-custodial sentencing options, early release mechanisms, and the construction of new ultra-modern facilities capable of housing 3,000 inmates each.

The measures, he said, are part of a broader strategy to reform the nation’s correctional system and alleviate the burden on existing facilities.
