An annual report and accounts by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) shows that despite a gradual increase in efficiency in bill collection, the debt profile of Nigerian electricity users stands at N385.7 billion as of 2023. Â
According to the report, bill collection efficiency stands at 73.65%, with distribution companies (DisCos) receiving N1.07 trillion in the period under review. Â

The report reveals that electricity distribution companies took in around 94% of power from the national grid. They issued bills totaling N1.4 trillion but managed to collect only N1.07 trillion, highlighting a significant payment shortfall despite improvements in bill collection.
