An annual report and accounts by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) shows that despite a gradual increase in efficiency in bill collection, the debt profile of Nigerian electricity users stands at N385.7 billion as of 2023.
According to the report, bill collection efficiency stands at 73.65%, with distribution companies (DisCos) receiving N1.07 trillion in the period under review.

The report reveals that electricity distribution companies took in around 94% of power from the national grid. They issued bills totaling N1.4 trillion but managed to collect only N1.07 trillion, highlighting a significant payment shortfall despite improvements in bill collection.
