The Peoples Democratic Party has criticised the Federal Government for failing to announce U.S. airstrikes on terrorist targets in North West Nigeria before the information was made public by U.S. President Donald Trump. The opposition party said Nigerians first learned of the operation through Trump’s social media posts, with official confirmation from Abuja coming later.
In a statement on Friday, PDP spokesperson Ini Ememobong said the Federal Government should have briefed citizens promptly to properly sensitise the public, warning that allowing foreign authorities to break such security news raised concerns about Nigeria’s communication structure on national security matters.
President Trump announced on Thursday that U.S. forces carried out what he described as successful strikes against terrorists in the North West, though he did not provide operational details. U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth later said the operation in Sokoto State was conducted in coordination with Nigerian authorities.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, had said the strikes were approved by the Nigerian government and carried out as a joint operation. He clarified that Nigeria provided the intelligence for the mission and that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave formal authorisation after consultations with U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
