The Nigerian Postal Service says Nigerians sending parcels to the United States will now pay 80 dollars, or the Naira equivalent, in prepaid customs duty. The new charge, which excludes letters and documents, takes effect from 29 August 2025.
NIPOST explained in a public notice that the measure follows a United States Executive Order suspending duty-free exemptions on postal shipments under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. It stressed that the duty applies globally and is not specific to Nigeria.

The agency warned that global logistics are being affected, with airlines and cargo operators adopting stricter procedures for U.S.-bound parcels. It said this could lead to extended processing and delivery times, as all shipments will undergo customs checks on arrival.
NIPOST added that it is engaging with the Universal Postal Union, U.S. Customs and airline partners to minimise disruption, and assured customers it remains committed to reliable postal and courier services despite the regulatory changes.
