Nigeria’s Challenges Rooted in Leadership Choices Not Poverty says Peter Obi

Declare War On Insecurity, Obi urges FG

The former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says Nigeria can afford basic necessities but fails to prioritise them due to poor governance. In a series of posts on social media platform X, the former Anambra State governor said the country’s challenges are not rooted in poverty but in leadership choices.

Mr Obi recounted an encounter with a Nigerian nurse trained in the United States, who described her shock at conditions in a government-owned hospital in Nigeria. According to him, the woman narrated how her injured sister was denied treatment until payment was made, and how limited and poorly handled medical equipment raised serious concerns about patient safety.

Mr Obi argued that funds spent on major government projects could have been redirected to healthcare. He said the ₦60 billion reportedly used to renovate the International Conference Centre in Abuja and the residence of Vice-President Kashim Shettima could have provided about 400 ambulances nationwide. He added that Nigeria’s inability to meet basic needs reflects misplaced priorities rather than a lack of resources.
