Nigeria’s Fourth Republic yet to Deliver Key Dividends says Ladoja

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, says Nigeria’s Fourth Republic has failed to deliver key democratic dividends, particularly in education, rule of law and security. He spoke on Thursday at the 23rd Annual Trust Dialogue held at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Kado, Abuja.

Oba Ladoja questioned why governments at all levels have been unable to guarantee access to education for Nigerian children after 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule. He said large numbers of out-of-school children pose serious risks to the country’s future, warning that sustainable development is impossible without universal access to education.

The traditional ruler also called for sustained constitutional and legal reforms, saying law making should not be limited to the National Assembly alone. He noted that state assemblies and local governments have powers to enact laws that can improve citizens’ welfare, but these are often underutilised.

Oba Ladoja expressed concern about challenges to the rule of law, citing inconsistent interpretation of laws and incidents involving security agencies, including accidental killings of citizens. He said Nigeria must confront governance, legal and security challenges directly to realise the full potential of its democratic system.
