Nigeria's Monthly data consumption hits 1.23 million terabytes

The Nigerian Communications Commission says monthly mobile data usage increased by about 140 percent between January 2023 and November 2025. According to the regulator, consumption rose from around 518,000 terabytes to more than 1.23 million terabytes over the period.

In its New Year message, the NCC warned that rising demand is placing increased pressure on telecommunications networks. It acknowledged that many consumers still experience inconsistent service quality, congestion in busy locations, outages linked to power challenges and infrastructure damage, as well as slow complaint resolution.

The commission said broadband subscriptions grew to 109.6 million in December 2025, up from 96.3 million a year earlier, driven by renewed investment and expanded network deployment. It said operators deployed more than 2,800 new and upgraded sites nationwide, lifting broadband penetration from 44.43 percent to 50.58 percent.

The NCC also reported improvements in network performance, with median 4G download speeds rising by about 24 percent to 20 megabits per second.
