Nigeria’s electricity subsidy bill rose to ₦536 billion in the first quarter of 2025, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.
The figure marks an increase of almost ₦65 billion from the previous quarter and reflects the continued absence of cost-reflective tariffs across the country’s electricity distribution companies.

NERC noted that the Federal Government is bearing the financial burden to bridge the gap between what consumers are charged and the actual cost of electricity generation.
The subsidy covers payments to generation companies through the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET), based on what DisCos are permitted to pay under current tariff regulations.
The report also revealed that DisCos remitted just under ₦355 billion out of a ₦370 billion NBET invoice, representing a 95% remittance rate for the quarter under review.
