The Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) has announced plans to establish mini tanneries across all states to enhance leather processing from hides and skin.
Speaking in Abuja, NILEST Director-General Mohammed Yakubu highlighted the need for new tanneries to provide essential infrastructure and technology for high-quality leather production. As chair of the National Leather Policy implementation committee, Mr. Yakubu emphasised that these efforts are vital to bringing back the industry, which has suffered from inadequate infrastructure.
Mr. Yakubu noted that a reliable and affordable power supply is essential for Nigeria to compete globally with countries like China, Brazil, and India in leather production. He said the institute would continue to lobby the federal government for concessions to lower energy costs, which could stimulate industry growth.
The DG added that establishing mini tanneries would also reduce local consumption of hides and skin, known as ‘ponmo,’ by creating more avenues for processing.
