The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), in partnership with the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), is set to launch an upgraded multi-purpose biometric identity card. The announcement was made by NIMC’s Director-General, Dr Abisoye Coker-Odusote, during a media briefing in Abuja over the weekend.
The event was attended by key figures, including the Managing Director of NIBSS, Mr Premier Oiwoh, the Managing Director of AfriGO, Mrs Ebehije Momoh, and the Managing Director of Data Mining Company, Mr Femi Akande.

Dr Coker-Odusote explained that the new card aims to serve a wide range of functions, addressing both federal government and private sector needs. It is also designed to tackle social and economic challenges, with a focus on integrating payment and identity functionalities.
The improved National Identification Number (NIN) card is expected to enhance service delivery and streamline various government and private sector interventions.
