The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning as temperatures continue to rise across several parts of the country. The agency says residents in states such as Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Kebbi, Cross River, Oyo and Ogun, as well as the Federal Capital Territory, may be at risk of extreme heat.
NiMet says the hot weather could lead to heat stress, a condition that occurs when the body cannot cool itself properly. The agency explains that high temperatures, humidity, dehydration and poor ventilation can increase the risk, especially for children, the elderly and outdoor workers.
The agency is advising Nigerians to stay well hydrated, remain in well-ventilated areas and wear light clothing during the hot period. It also recommends using hats or sunshades when outdoors and limiting strenuous activities between midday and four in the afternoon.

NiMet also urged parents to ensure that children are kept cool and hydrated and should never be left alone in parked vehicles. The agency says taking these precautions will help reduce the risk of heat-related health problems.
