NiMet Workers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Welfare Demands

Employees of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency have commenced an indefinite nationwide strike over unresolved welfare issues. The workers, under the umbrella of three major aviation unions, accuse NiMet of failing to honour agreements on financial allowances, wage awards, and entitlements dating back to the 2019 minimum wage.

In a joint letter issued on Monday, the unions also accused the agency’s management of withholding critical documents, excluding some staff from past payments, and neglecting staff training programmes while prioritising executive retreats.

The unions said the agency’s refusal to fulfil a January agreement and address the growing pay disparity with other agencies left them with no choice but to resume their suspended industrial action. They directed members to withdraw all services from April 22 until further notice.

NiMet had earlier appealed for a postponement of the strike following discussions with union leaders, but the workers say the management has failed to meet its promises.
