The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, says nine million of Nigeria’s poorest households have received direct cash transfers under the Federal Government’s social protection reforms. He spoke on Thursday while delivering a keynote address at the IDA20 retrospective launch hosted by the World Bank Group.
The event reviewed outcomes from IDA20, the twentieth replenishment of the International Development Association, which mobilised 97.4 billion dollars in concessional financing for vulnerable countries, including Nigeria. Edun said more than 12 million Nigerians have also been enrolled through digital ID integration, with women accounting for nearly 60 per cent.
He said the reforms were introduced at a time of global economic strain marked by pandemic aftershocks and rising food insecurity. According to him, Nigeria chose reform, including exchange rate unification, removal of petrol subsidy and the end of deficit monetisation, with support from IDA development policy operations.

Edun added that Nigeria’s partnership with IDA is distinctive because the country serves as both a beneficiary and a contributing donor, and said the programme has helped strengthen policy coordination and support economic reform.
