Emergency services in Lagos say nine people were rescued and five others revived after a fire broke out at Afriland Tower on Broad Street, Lagos Island. The building, which houses several businesses, was evacuated following a distress call on Tuesday afternoon.
Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the blaze began in the basement inverter room, spreading smoke through several floors and triggering panic among occupants. Many managed to escape without injury.
The agency reported that search-and-rescue operations were mounted swiftly, alongside medical support for victims. Social media videos captured the chaos as residents and passersby helped evacuate people before emergency crews contained the fire. Efforts are ongoing to stabilise four more individuals affected by smoke inhalation.
