NLC Orders Indefinite Strike Over Non-Implementation of Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its members in states that have not begun implementing the new minimum wage to embark on an indefinite strike starting December 1, 2024. This decision was reached during the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting over the weekend.

Expressing frustration, the NLC condemned certain state governments for their refusal to implement the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act. It described the delay as a legal and moral failure, with millions of workers being deprived of fair wages despite mounting economic pressures. The NLC accused these states of betraying workers who rely on them for fair treatment and protection.

In a related issue, the NLC criticised petroleum marketers for allegedly inflating fuel prices, claiming that the pump prices currently charged are far above the true market value. The union accused marketers of exploiting Nigerians amid an already challenging economic climate.

The NLC also called on the Federal Government to take immediate, substantive action to address the worsening economic hardship across the country. It highlighted that inflation and the rising costs of essential goods are making it increasingly difficult for workers to sustain themselves and their families.
