The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has criticised the service-based electricity tariff structure, describing it as “the highest form of fraud.” Under the system, electricity users are grouped into five bands based on hours of supply: Band A enjoys at least 20 hours daily, Band B gets 16 hours, Band C 12 hours, Band D 8 hours, and Band E 4 hours.
During a budget defence at the National Assembly, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu claimed that 90% of Band A customers are satisfied with their service and hinted at plans to migrate more users to higher bands.

However, Ajaero condemned the arrangement as discriminatory and questioned the fairness of placing some users in lower bands. He also criticised government allocations for private power firms in the 2025 budget, insisting such funds should instead address other pressing national needs.
