The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has threatened mass action and a possible boycott of elections if real-time electronic transmission of results is not included in the amendment to the Electoral Act 2022. In a statement issued on Sunday, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the law must give a clear and unambiguous mandate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to transmit and collate results electronically from polling units in real time.
The warning follows the Senate’s rejection on February 4 of a proposal to make real-time electronic transmission of results mandatory while retaining the existing provision that allows discretionary electronic transfer under the Electoral Act 2022. The amendment bill seeks to make electronic transmission compulsory, link it directly to INEC’s result viewing portal, IReV, and eliminate reliance on manual collation, which remains the primary method under the current law.

Mr Ajaero said the decision has fuelled public distrust and confusion, demanding immediate clarity from the Senate on the exact provisions passed. He warned that failure to include real-time electronic transmission would lead to mass action before, during and after elections, insisting that Nigerians deserve a transparent electoral process as preparations begin towards the 2027 polls.
