NLCGA President Pushes Gas as Safer, Sustainable Energy Solution at Lagos Conference

The President of the Nigeria Liquified and Compressed Gasses Association (NLCGA), Mr. Felix Ekundayo, has advocated for Liquified and Compressed Gasses as safer energy alternatives to fuel.

Speaking with Radio Now 95.3 FM at the 14th NLCGA Conference in Lagos, Mr. Ekundayo highlighted that the sector’s rigorous training and safety standards provide it with a significant comparative advantage in energy safety and sustainability.

“Natural gas, as with any fuel, is safe. It is the handling of it that is the issue. It is how you handle a fuel that is the issue. I will challenge you and say how many times have you seen the macabre spectacles of charred bodies that we’ve seen with fuel tanker accidents. You’ve seen them with gasoline, you’ve seen them with diesel, right? I will challenge you to find me an incident where there has been similar events in either LPG or in natural gas transportation, whether it’s CNG and then the new LNG,” said Mr. Ekundayo.

Meanwhile, the Treasurer of the association, Mrs. Joy Shaiyen, believes this year’s conference has successfully laid a foundation for the future of Nigeria’s gas industry.

She said, “absolutely, I would say that it’s achieved on its objectives. First of all, because we’re smack in the middle of the decade of gas, and as you all know subsidies have been withdrawn from premium motor spirit. Everybody is looking for a cost-effective means of generating their own energy, especially as the national grid is not as dependable as it used to be. So if you listen to the conversations from the ones with investors who want to import equipment, trying to understand the IDEC, the fiscal incentives, the tax incentives that the government has put in place, how they can take advantage of it. To the people who are simply trying to understand what’s the difference between LPG, what’s the difference between CNG. So we see a lot of interest both on the investor side, the consumer side, trying to understand how best they can evolve and take advantage of the transition that we’re in.So yes, I would say that the conference has achieved on its objectives.”

The 14th NLCGA Conference, themed Gas: The Road to Economic Recovery, took place on November 6th and 7th at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, attracting numerous industry leaders and stakeholders.
