The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has opened his defence in court and listed several top politicians and former military chiefs as witnesses.
At the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, Kanu told Justice James Omotosho that he intends to call 23 witnesses, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, and former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai. He also named Lagos and Imo State Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Hope Uzodinma among others.
Kanu’s notice of defence came shortly after activist Omoyele Sowore led protests in parts of Abuja demanding his release. The IPOB leader said he would testify personally and provide sworn statements from voluntary witnesses, assuring the court that proceedings would not be delayed.

Meanwhile, a magistrate court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, and twelve others who participated in the protest. They are facing charges including criminal conspiracy, disobedience of lawful order, and disturbance of public peace.
