Nnamdi Kanu Petitions CJN, Seeks New Judge for Trial

Nnamdi Kanu Petitions CJN, Seeks New Judge for Trial

The detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has petitioned the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, requesting the reassignment of his case to a judge with proper jurisdiction. His legal team, led by Aloy Ejimakor, argued that Justice Binta Nyako, who is currently handling the case, had previously recused herself following Kanu’s allegations of bias.

Kanu is facing seven terrorism-related charges filed by the Federal Government. His lawyers contend that legal principles prohibit a judge from presiding over a case after recusing themselves. Ejimakor urged the CJN to intervene administratively to ensure the case is reassigned to maintain judicial fairness.

Ejimakor also warned that assigning the case to a judge who had stepped down could undermine public confidence in the judiciary. He revealed that Kanu had formally lodged a complaint against Justice Nyako with the National Judicial Council (NJC) on 14 January 2025, and the petition was still under review.

The legal team is urging the CJN to transfer the case to another judge in Abuja or move it to a court in the South-East, emphasising the need for a fair and impartial trial.
