A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on seven counts of terrorism, treason and involvement with a proscribed movement. Justice James Omotosho ruled that Kanu made broadcasts inciting violence and killings in pursuit of his campaign for an independent Biafran state, adding that executions are now frowned upon.

Kanu, who had earlier dismissed his lawyers and refused to enter a defence, was absent when the verdict was delivered after being removed from court for unruly behaviour. Security was tightened around the courthouse ahead of the ruling, which comes years after his initial arrest in 2015, his jump of bail in 2017, his re-arrest in 2021 and a series of appeals that delayed the case.
